What We've Been Up To
OH! Sponsors Trail Rehab - Bear Mountain State Park
The Little Debbie parent company, McKee Foods, has pledged to help you find ways to enjoy the outdoors in your community through the Outdoor Happiness movement. They have done so by sponsoring outdoor projects from Florida to Maine, from Alaska to California and everywhere in between and will continue to do so until they have sponsored a project in all 50 states.
One of those projects includes a trail rehab in New York’s Bear Mountain State Park. Situated just 40 miles upriver from Manhattan, this is one of the most visited parts of the Appalachian Trail.
From the novice nature lover to the experienced hiker, the park attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country. You can imagine that such traffic would require quite a bit of upkeep to the trail.
For this particular rehabilitation, beginning in 2006, volunteers have crafted more than 1,000 hand-hewn steps and constructed over a mile of treadway on the Appalachian Trail and Bear Mountain’s connecting network of sidetrails – including handicapped accessible and novice loops. With the help of funds received on behalf of Outdoor Happiness, the rehab is on its way to being completed.
